Bar Juventud, Los Gallardos
Posted by admin in Restaurants, Tapas on October 29th, 2009
In my youth, Bar Juventud was the “other bar”. As people who lived on the “Crespo” side of the street, going into Juventud was akin to a Madrid supporter sneaking into a Barça pub. Only to be attempted wearing a large hat when noone was around. Which was a pity as it always had better tapas.
Then we grew up and rarely visited Los Gallardos, as we lived out in the sticks and once we were given a moped LG was “too rural” for our newly discovered expensive tastes. But Juventud still had the best tapas in the Levante. And it’s not just me – the director of the RTV-A (admittedly from Los Gallardos) thought much the same. (He also said the same about the old La Rueda – the perils of being related to the families of two different bars, no doubt).
Fastforward twenty years to 2009, when an Uruguayan named Eduardo and his wife took the place over. Eduardo started to run summer BBQ’s, once a week. Not for long, but it became famous and full. After all, the man is a master of the Parriallada. Despite his apparant OCD which leads him to wash his hands often (a good sign in both chefs and surgeons).
Eduardo has stopped the outdoor Parrialladas for the winter – despite the small door and narrow space for clients, Jueventud boasts a large exterior patio – but upon a smile, a wink and a 24 hour reservation will do one. As we discovered tonight.
The menu was simple. An ensalada de huerta, lots of tomatos. Couple of bottles of wine that had -how to put it?- been too close to the BBQ to be considered vintage but were still quaffable. Pan, with lots of ajo. Some homemade chimicurri. The best jacket potato I’ve had all year – crisp yet soft and tasty. And either secreto iberico or ternera – entrecote. You can have it well done, or very well done.Coffee, Orujo and a couple of Mr J’s “homemade” cigars for pudding. Ironically the cigars also seem to be from Uruguay.
The BBQ consists of a bonfire of ancient olive wood, coals from which are heaped over, under, and alongside, the meat. So rare doesn’t appear to be an option.
Flippin delicious. If you don’t like food like this, ‘eff off back to McDonalds. The daily tapas are good, too.
La Cabaña Argentina, Mojacar Playa

La Cabaña Argentina, Mojacar Playa
La Cabaña is the original Argentine on Mojacar Playa. Late last year they were evicted from their original premises (opposite Tito’s) by a landlord who tried to triple their rent. Once they had gone, he reopened the premises keeping almost everything identical.
This little scam didn’t work too well, as not only did all the regulars quickly catch on to what happened, but they managed to get new (larger and better) premises only 100m down the road.
So they’re currently just past Palacio Imperial, in front of Mediterraneo restaurant (Price Brown estate agents?).
Now, we decided to look for a restaurant on Monday 5th, at about 2030ish. So we left, expecting Mojacar to be dead. Instead, almost everything was open, although nowhere seemed busy.
When we got there, we seemed the be the first people in, followed shortly afterwards by a table of 4. Their new premises are spacious, comfortable, clean and modern. I liked it.
The menu is the same as before. Here’s a slightly skewed photo.

As you can see, the most expensive steak is €38. Which seems high. Are they shipping this stuff in first class? We ignored this, and went for a combined mixed salad, plus a ribeye (Churrasco de Cuadril Argentino) and Solomillo Argentino (200 grms, the GF ain’t big enough for the big one -the big one, by the way, costs €27).
The salad came, and it was very nice. But still, just a salad. €9, I have just spotted while looking at the bill to write this, which seems high for some lettuce, tomato, sweetcorn, palm heart and one bit of asparagus.
Out came the main courses. The ribeye was all right. Not amazing, but Churrasco rarely is. Tasty enough. Delicious jacket potato, with some garlic butter dribbled in it. The Solomillo Argentino was off, and as soon as the owner sniffed it is was back in the kitchen. Very good service there, can’t complain, changed it at once. However, the second one wasn’t a lot better. Cooked nicely over their open barbecue fire, cooked to perfection in fact, just wasn’t amazing. The owner confirmed that it’s shipped in vacuum packed.
I had a cortado and a glass of Orujo (Hierbas).
Now, apart from the bad Churrasco, I can’t complain. Lovely place. Wonderful service. But, for the above plus a couple of beers and a water, the bill came to €55,90.
€55,90? For two steaks, salad coffee + liqueur and two beers? No wonder we’ve lost the tourists. Nobody is going to come to Mojacar for an average steak and pay €30 a head for it. But, and this is amazing when you think about it, it’s not an expensive restaurant for the Playa.

La Cabana Argentine Restaurant, Mojacar

Update: 4th August 2008. It’s now moved, according to the normally reliable Lenox Napier (I never venture down Mojacar Playa this time of year unless driven). It’s now in Pueblo Diana, in front of El Levante. The landlord has reopened keeping it almost the same.

La Cabana Argentine Restaurant, Parrilla Argentina, is a restaurant in which I only ever seem to go to when I’m with a large group of people who are always determined to get drunk. Hence, it’s always been a bit difficult remembering much about it the next day. Nor have I ever been much inclined to try.
I’m not sure why this is. It doesn’t, to judge from the bills the next day, seem to be especially cheap; it’s not famous for hosting large drunken parties of rowdy people; and it doesn’t tend to put on large plates of food to share. It’s probably because it has a large main salon roadside where 20 or 30 can sit at ease. (Also smaller tables and a second room leading off the main one).
For a steak, taking into consideration the fact you have to face Mojacar Playa, I’d prefer to go to Cortijo Albari or Lomo Blanco. After all, if you’re going to bbq a steak, I prefer olive wood rather than charcoal. And while Argentine steak has a certain flavour, I’m dubious that you can get the real stuff in Mojacar.
But never mind about all that nonsense. If you’re going to turn up with a bunch of people who all want meat, and want a drink with it, no point going to the previously mentioned places. And it’s easier getting a taxi home from Mojacar. And La Cabana is certainly more informal than Albari or Lomo Blanco.
I have to say, the meat on Saturday was very nice. Mandine ordered for the table (it was, after all, her birthday) and a selection of meats and salads appeared. An interesting melted mozzarella dish, salads, some Argentine sausage that frankly left me as cold as it was, some dips, and other starters were soon demolished. We then called out for the main courses, and the meat that appeared was very decent. The steak was rather overdone for my taste, but since apparently we requested it this way I couldn’t say much. I’ve had it better done on other occasions. Also chicken. All grilled on the charcoal grill. Everybody else got chips, I got a jacket potato with a nice garlic centre. After I had smugly eaten half of it, somebody pointed out that they’d ordered it. It still tasted OK.
There was another large table in that night, a bunch of local lads out on a stag do. They ordered a round of tequila shots that involved putting on a hard hat, being hit on the head five times, then doing the shot. Since our table was mainly composed of girls, they soon came over and invited us to a round. I had two. Very nice. Leaves the head ringing. Don’t mix tequila with Cava, the bubbles get up your nose.
Vaguely remember coffee, then some loud music next door in Sitio. Don’t worry, I got home safely.
