Roquetas del Mar pound to subsidise animal spaying

The animal pound at Roquetas del Mar is to offer, until the 15th of Feb, subsidised animal spaying for domestic pets, to help keep down the number of unwanted (and then dumped) pets. Information and participating vets available online at: http://centrozoosanitarioroquetas.blogspot.com/

Worth remembering that the pound has had its budget slashed by 50% for 2009, so they are desperate to keep the number of strays down. Any stray handed in there now has 10 days to be returned to its owner / adopted before being put down.

Roquetas slashes its stray animal budget in half

Roquetas town hall has taken advantadge of a renegotiation with the private company that runs its stray animal shelter to cut its budget in half, this year to only €75,000, as part of its 2009 Austerity Budget.

As a result, the management company intends to drop its time it keeps animals from 27 days to only 10 days, before they are put down. The centre will now also charge the public a flat rate of €20 to pick up animals or collect strays. The centre will also slash its opening hours, which means that if the local police or firemen catch an animal they will have to keep them in cages until the shelter opens, sometimes over the weekend.

The manager of the shelter, Miguel Castillo, points out that these cuts are the only way to keep going, and reminds us that each animal costs Roquetas del Mar an average of €70.

He’s also setup a blog where he updates us with pictures of cute animals and news from the shelter, you can see it at http://centrozoosanitarioroquetas.blogspot.com/.

Roquetas del Mar wants to build on protected natural spaces

Roquetas del Mar town hall has announced that it will try to overturn a ruling on “Las Salinas”, which is the only undeveloped part of the Roquetas beach front. “Las Salinas” has been declared an area of the Public Domain due to it’s importance for local wildlife; Roquetas town hall will join forces with local landowners, lead by Miguel Rifa (one of the founders of Hotel Playa Group, who sold out for a lot and then set up the Cytimar Hotel group) who want to build some 18,000 homes, and 2000 hotel rooms there.

The position of the town hall is that the order protecting Las Salinas was issued by a junior who was not qualified to sign the order. Upon investigation by teleprensa.es, it turns out the order was signed by the Sub-Minister for the National Environment Ministry in Madrid, who can probably sign whatever he wants.

Informed sources claim that the attempt will have no effect on the eventual protection of Las Salinas and is a blatent attempt by the town hall to A) Keep in with the big boys (the ones who want to build on the protected land) and B) slow down the order so that it is only signed into permanent effect once the current administation has left or retired.

Even so, it’s a flaming disgrace.

Boulanger in Roquetas del Mar

I popped into Boulanger in Grand Plaza commercial centre, Roquetas del Mar last week, looking for a present for a birthday.

Wandering around, I decided to buy the Nintendo Wii. So, popped up to the second floor where there was a display stand of around 11 of them for sale. I picked one up, only to discover it was sopping wet. The a/c unit in the roof above was pouring water onto the stand, and every box was sodden. Finger would go through the cardboard it was so wet.

I pointed this out to the salesman and asked if they had any in the storeroom out back. They didn’t, but urged me to buy one of the wet ones because “it would dry out”.

Right. I think I’ll avoid that branch in future.
