Police on full alert in Roquetas for trouble

Police are on full orders to be on maximum alert for trouble in the Roquetas & Poniente area. Community leaders amongst the African immigrant community have warned of “high tensions” after the recent murder of Saidi E.S.  , killed by mistake by a friend in a fight. Immigrant communities are still tense after the race riots earlier this year, and low level trouble is constant between the immigrants and the Gitano communities. Almost 1 in 4 of all people registered as living in Roquetas are African immigrants.

Roquetas Riots Rumble On

Sunday saw another disturbed night in the “200 Viviendas” area of Roquetas del Mar as roaming groups of North Africans (Marroquis as the Spanish press call them) clashed with groups of ethnic Gypsies (Gitanos). Guardia Civil anti riot police tried to enforce a full curfew in the area as from 22.00 hours onwards, but were unable to prevent several bloody clashes between the groups.

There were also reports of barricades being put up, some of which were charged by the antidisturbios riot police.

Mindful of the last severe race riots that shook El Ejido in 2000 and previous years, authorities have been appealing for calm, while also bussing in police reinforcements to patrol the area 24/7, and also a police helicopter. They are working with local charity and social groups to try to defuse the situation.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the original attack was in a dispute over a drug deal that went wrong. Guardia Civil have not yet arrested the alleged murderer but say they know who he is and are actively searching for him.

Meanwhile, the story has made the BBC (View Story). More good press for the area!

Riots in Roquetas

Roquetas del Mar suffered a night of near rioting as roving groups of gitanos and marroquies (Gypsies and North Africans) clashed with police and firemen after a fight between two groups got out of hand.

It appears that a gitano stabbed a marroqui in a fight – the marroqui died of the wound before getting to hospital. In an apparent revenge attack, a group of his friends proceeded to torch the gitanos house, and the neighbours, before proceeding to attack a group of gitanos who came to put the fire out.

As the first fire and police units on the scene were greeted with a volley of stones and improvised missles, they withdrew and called in riot police. This set the scene for an evening of running battles between the Police, the marroquis and the gypsies.

4 people have been arrested for causing the fires. The supposed murderer is still at large but being hunted by the Guardia Civil. Extra Police units are patrolling the affected areas (around the area known as “200 Viviendas”) in order to prevent more trouble breaking out.

Local authorities will be anxious to prevent riots on the same scale as in El Ejido in 2000, which started after a marroqui killed a Spanish woman – this lead to several days of full scale rioting and international attention.

A young Marroqui was also knifed in an attack in Alicante city – he too died before receiving medical attention.

Police charge protestors in Almeria

These are the injuries sustained by a farmer after police charged a demonstration held this afternoon in front of the tax offices in Almeria. There were almost 20 civilians injured, plus some 13 police officers, although the worst injury reported was a severe cut to the upper arm of a woman.

Farmers, deliverymen, drivers and other strikers went to a rally this morning called by COAG and ASAJA, bringing with them a large number of boxes of fruit and veg, which they left in front of the tax office “in a symbolic lieu of taxes”. However, when police ordered the crowd to calm down, they were pelted by fruit. According to eye witnesses, they “ran” into the offices and barricaded the doors until reinforcements arrived, upon which they proceeded to charge and disperse the crowd.

The civil governor of Almeria, Miguel Corpas, has promised to talk again to the Ministry of the Environment to ask again for a rebate on taxes imposed on local farmers and fruit producers due to losses. Local union chief Francisco Vargas said that this was “mierda”, and co chief Gongora said “We have nothing” and promised to carry out another manifestation in El Ejido tomorrow morning at 11:30.
