Just noticed that if you type a Spanish world cup enquiry into Google (ie, españa copa mundial), at the bottom of the page, where it normally says goooooogle, they’ve changed it to gooooooooool!

Google wave

By admin on Monday, October 26, 2009

I opened up my email box this am to find an invitation to trial the new beta version of a product from Google called “Wave”.

Google wave is, according to the blurb:

Google Wave is an online communication and collaboration tool that makes real-time interactions more seamless — in one place, you can communicate and collaborate using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is a conversation with multiple participants — participants are people added to a wave to discuss and collaborate on its content. Participants can reply any time and anywhere within a wave, and they can edit content and add more participants as a wave develops. It’s also possible to rewind waves with the playback functionality, to see what happened, and when.

Looks very nice and I felt proud at having been selected.

Trouble is – I don’t know anyone else who’s been invited, and I’m not allowed to invite anyone. And it’s frigging useless unless two people are involved, as its a communication tool.

It’s like being the very first person to signup to Facebook. :s

Google Docs Design Flaw May Fool You Into Making Your Docs Editable by Anyone

By admin on Thursday, January 22, 2009

While I assume that the number of people using Google Docs in Almeria can probably be counted on one hand (prove me wrong people!), there’s an interesting article from wired.com on the security settings:

Wired.com has discovered a design flaw in the web app’s user interface that could lead users to mistakenly open up their docs to editing by anybody on the internet.

Funny thing is, we found out about it the hard way.

A co-worker of mine discovered Wednesday morning that the Wired Tech Layoff Tracker, a spreadsheet we’re sharing with all of you using Google’s free service, had been changed. The name of the reader who had edited the doc wasn’t known to my co-worker, and he certainly hadn’t knowingly given edit permissions to anyone outside Wired.com.

Thankfully, our hacker was a benevolent fellow who immediately notified us he had been able to edit our shared document. Thanks to him, we were able to correct the exploit before anyone else could fiddle with our spreadsheet.

Read the whole article here. Google Docs, for those of you who don’t know, is a free online document editing suite (similar to Microsoft Office) that allows users to share and write documents online.

Google Chrome

Just installed and started to use Google Chrome, the new browser from Google.

It’s… interesting. Just a browser. They expect the webpage to do everything for you. I just don’t know how comfortable I am with Google being 100% of my browsing experience. A little too much control over my life.

An example of internet rumours that are wrong

I was looking up the life of Mestrius Plutarch, the greek historian, and this is what google returned:

  • Greek biographer who wrote Parallel Lives (46?-120 AD)
    wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

  • (Lucius?) Mestrius Plutarchus (Greek: Πλούταρχος; c. 46 AD – 120 AD), better known in English as Plutarch, was a Greek historian, biographer, essayist, and Middle Platonist. …

  •
  • A Greek biographer who wrote “parallel” lives of famous Romans and Greeks.

  •

  • Greek biographer; his Parallel Lives was a source for much of English literature, including several of Shakespeare’s plays.

  •
  • A roman historian.

    Gotta love that last one.
