El Algarrobico vanishes under Greenpeace netting

El Algarrobico, everybodies favourite hotel on the beach in Carboneras, disappeared under 1800o m2 of green netting as Greenpeace yet again called for the expropiation and demolition of this half built hotel on the beach.

Some 60 Greenpeace volunteers turned up to help out, and were quickly surrounded by a “large” number of police and Guardia units after the Azata del Sol (the owners of the hotel) watchmen called for help, but were permitted to finish off their protest peacefully.

This is the forth major “attack” on the hotel by Greenpeace, who are determined to keep this hotel (allegedly illegal, built without permits on the beach) in the forefront of the public mind and not allow the Government to quietly open the hotel.

In related news, an official Government legal analysis of the “El Algarrobico” situation advised the central government against expropiation of the hotel until the legal path had been exhausted. Or the hotel legalised and opened, of course.

No more night beach parties in Benidorm

As from Monday, the town hall of Benidorm has ordered that anybody found on any of the 5 main beaches between 12 midnight and 7 in the morning is to be cautioned or, if incapicitated (ie, pissed), fined up to €750.

Mainly due to the fact that the tractors they send out at night to clean the beaches keep running over drunks asleep on the beach. Nothing to do with the need to swell the local coffers, I’m sure..

Roquetas beach guards save a young girl

Three cheers for a sharp eyed volunteer Roquetas beach guard, who saved a young girl (12) from a broken back when he spotted the danger signs, after she dived head first into a half metre of water.

He insisted upon keeping her floating in the water in the recovery position for 15 minutes until a specialised ambulance turned up. Doctors say that if they had dragged her to the beach she would have been paralysed for life. As it is, she is expected to make a full recovery.

Blue flag beaches in Almeria

The Blue flag beaches in Almeria report is out, and this year we have lost a further 5 flags, dropping from 15 beaches to 10. (We had 16 in 2006).

Marina de la Torre & Venta del Bancal in Mojacar got one each, San Jose beach in Nijar, La Bajadilla & Urbanizacion Roquetas, in Roquetas del Mar, Levante – Almerimar, Poniente Almerimar & Guardias Viejas, in El Ejido, and San Nicolas & El Censo, in Adra.

Again, neither Garrucha nor Vera got anything. For some reason, nobody seems to be telling us why these beaches lost their blue flag, but I suspect that vast quantities of raw sewage probably has something to do with it. Not a good idea when your economy is based on people coming to swim in the sea. However, since all the fishermen are on strike, at least we don’t need to worry about the pollution getting into the food chain.

I await the Ecologistas en Accion annual “black flag” awards with interest.
