1,500 homes to be built from next year in Palomares

Grupo Almanzora says it will press ahead from next year with plans to build 1,500 homes in Palomares, along with the obligatory hotel. The company owns 75% of the land, and some 55 smallholders own the rest of the land which is to be developed. Most of it is prime beach front property. Vera activates Emergency Flood Plan for this weekend

Vera council has confirmed that it’s activated its emergency Flood Plan for this weekend, as it looks like it’ll rain tomorrow (bummer for Los Carrascos fiesta in Turre…) Emergency services in the town will be prepared with a “coordinated response” to any localised flooding and have made sure all material and equipment they need is in a fit state, and that they know where it all is. Dead sea turtle appears on Vera Playa

A large sea turtle has been found dead on Vera beach, just outside Garrucha. It was some 70 cm across. No news on how it died, but it probably ate too many plastic bags (they go after them in the water thinking they’re jellyfish). Vera & Cuevas beach campaign launched after algae scare

The county council has launched a national advertising campaign to bring tourists back to Vera & Cuevas after the recent algae scare that saw the beaches closed. The cost of the campaign, 25,000€, is coming out of the provincial tourism fund. It will run on the internet, radio and magazine ads and a series of posters. Vera beach reopens as toxic algae vanishes

Vera Playa has been declared free of the toxic algae that has plagued the beaches in recent days, and with no new medical cases over the weekend the Junta’s health ministry has removed bathing restrictions. However, the algae is still present in Villaricos and Palomares, so the restrictions continue in place there. 8 people were treated on Sunday for exposure to the toxic stuff.  

Vera townhall identifies what type of micro algae has closed our beaches

Although the Junta de Andalucia and its health ministry have limited themselves to vague comments about “some sort of micro algae dinoflagellate” (something the Ecologists find suspicious and are claiming there may be a cover up) Vera townhall has let slip that the specific genus is Ostreopsis. The closure of beaches in Vera & Cuevas “have no time limit” according to the town halls, who issued a joint statement last night. The Andalusian Ministry of Health recommended the closure of the beaches after a dangerous microalgae which can causes rashes and respiratory difficulties was detected in the water on Tuesday. Local beaches closed in major health scare after dozens of bathers affected

The Health Department has cordoned off several beaches in Vera and Cuevas after dozens of bathers yesterday were rushed to medical centres suffering severe allergy attacks which in some cases were causing severe respiratory difficulties. The problem is a type of marine plankton called a dinoflagellate (see wikipedia link). It seems that they are blossoming off several beaches in the area, and can cause severe allergy attacks in bathers who come into contact with them. 11 armed youths arrested for spate of break-ins across Levante

The Guardia Civil have swooped on 11 young men and arrested them for a spate of break ins and robberies across the Garrucha, Vera and Turre regions. The gangs would break into homes, warehouses and cortijos to strip them bare, even down to the copper wiring in the walls.
