Back in 2007, Jaume Fíguls parked his van in a bus lane whilst he carried a delivery into a shop. When he came out, he’d been ticketed. Fair enough. Never thought anything more of it, and never received a fine, either. Until last week, when it turned up. 7 years later.
Almeria city has been found guilty of not following correct procedures in notifying hundreds of drivers of traffic fines. The average fine was about €48. It will cost the city €300 in court costs for every fine which is appealed against. Locals will remember that a few months ago, some bright spark in the traffic department put up a 50 sign at the junction by the Turre fire station (just before the new bridge). This 50 limit extends for aprox 500m before going back up to 80 as you hit the bridge. The town of La Mojonera is bankrupt, and so is raising taxes across the board. Seems that part of the plan is to double all municipal traffic fines…. and no doubt order the locales to fine anyone for anything. Story here.
