Mojácar bypass bypassed for at least another year

Remember the Mojácar bypass? The Diputación has admitted that it’s working on yet another new plan for it, and it’s not going to be published until at least the end of the year. An answer from the Junta “may” be expected sometime during summer 2013. The last one never went though an environmental report before being drawn up (ah hem!), and was sent back to Almería for the environmental impact study to be prepared. Cuevas to appeal against tortoise sanctuary

La Voz reports that Cuevas del Almanzora is to launch a major legal appeal against the expropriation of 500 has of land to create a major tortoise sanctuary (Tortoise reserve setup in exchange for the AVE). About 130 people will have their land taken away by Madrid in order to create a sort of Stalag Luft for the testudo graeca between two larger, government owned plots of land in the Sierras Almagro and Aguilón. Tortoise reserve setup in exchange for the AVE

Bit of a strange one this, and I’ve only spotted it because of a news article about a legal challenge. It seems that, due to destruction of habitat to the local tortoise (tortuga mora) caused by the construction of the AVE, the national government approved the expropriation of 500 hectares of land in Cuevas del Almanzora and Pulpí, to connect up two other government owned plots of land, between the Sierras Aguilón and Almagrera. Blanco visits Almeria to oversee AVE work

Minister of State for Development José Blanco (known to his friends as ¡Peeepe!) together with an assortment of VIP’s and hanger-on’s, visited Almería yesterday to oversee the switching on of the tunnelling machine that is building the 7,5km tunnel from Sorbas to Barranco de los Gafarillos. The tunnel will be the longest in Andalucia once finished, and in the top 5 nationally.
