Two animals died in horrible circumstances due to the negligence of their owners in the hot weather. A police patrol spotted a dying dog in the back of a locked car yesterday and smashed the windows of the vehicle to get him out. Groupers find new home in Roquetas Aquarium

The Mediterranean grouper (mero in Spanish*) is a protected species, as we’ve eaten most of them, and so scientists receive EU money to try to breed the little buggers. Trouble is, sometimes the programme doesn’t work, and what to do then with 20 massive fish weighing up to 24 kg each? Eat them would be the obvious answer, but again, they’re protected.

Marta bones probably over a century old

Forensics are back on the bones found whilst digging for Marta del Castillo’s body in Seville (see yesterdays entry here), and the police reckon they’re between 100 and 200 years old. Bones from several different bodies were found all jumbled up together. The Police say they suspect someone probably came across the bones whilst on a building site and took them down to the tip under cover of night to prevent work being halted. Almeria – Seville air route to cost taxpayers 2.5 million euros a year

The Almeria to Seville air route is being underwritten by the Junta to the fantastic amount of 2,5 million euros a year, or 10.292.000 over the next four years. The air route was declared to be “obligatory for the social good”, which basically means it has to carry on regardless of actual traffic, and so the long suffering taxpayer must again reach into their pockets to underwrite it.

USA wants to double size of military base in Seville

The US has officially asked Spain if it can double its military force at Morón military base in Seville. Currently they base 500 marines and associated staff there. The request was slipped into Rajoy’s ear when he visited Washington last week, and came back so punch-drunk he forgot to mention it. Almeria – Seville – Madrid flights to be combined into one trip

Air Europa, which is taking over the Almeria – Seville and the Almeria-Madrid routes, has announced that it will not operate separate flights, but instead one long “triangle”. So the route will be Madrid – Almeria – Seville and vice versa, as from the 17th of Feb. Almeria – Madrid route taken up by Air Europa

Air Europa has announced that it is to launch a scheduled flight between Almeria Airport and Madrid Barajas. It will fly twice on weekdays and once on Sundays. Flights start on the 17th of Feb with tickets costing from €113 per seat. The airline has promised to cover the route only until the 31st of July 2014, at which point it has the option to continue with the route.
