When the mob came for the priest

It was the cat that awoke me. I started from my wicker seat, the one that my parents had bought me when I left the seminary. I was startled awake from my siesta, and my prayer book fell from my lap, and my glasses with it. I blinked at the broken spectacles. I scrabbled at the frames in fury, and only managed to cut my hand on the thick, broken glass. The welling blood on Continue reading When the mob came for the priest

Despotic priest causes revolution amongst the parishioners

Five villages in the Alpujarras who share a priest have united by calling him a “despot”. Things came to a head this weekend when he refused to start the Holy Week processions. Miguel Teruel arrived just over a year ago to become the priest for the villages of Alcolea, Fondón, Fuente Victoria, Laujar and Bayárcal. But his new way of tending to the spiritual needs of his parishioners has not gone down well. He has Continue reading Despotic priest causes revolution amongst the parishioners

A dozen priests fired with papal authority for child abuse in Granada

At least a dozen Catholic priests have been “suspended from duties” from the Granada branch of the Church for sexual abuse of children. The Public Prosecutor of Continue reading A dozen priests fired with papal authority for child abuse in Granada

Mad priest bans crying at funerals, changes funeral march for carols

Father Nicolás Timpu has also been commenting on the possible reasons for early deaths during the funeral mass. “Probably a sinner” he told mourners as he buried a 25 year-old man who had been run over, “best place for him”. At the funeral of Continue reading Mad priest bans crying at funerals, changes funeral march for carols

Eccehomo priest nabbed for running off with the cash

Remember last years “Ecce homo” fun? When an old dear decided the mural of her church needed restoring, did it herself, it looked like a muppet and the original mural turned out to be a priceless work of art? And then loads and loads of tourists started turning up to gawk at it? Anyway, in a further blow to whatever belief we had left in Humanity, the Catholic priest at that Church has just been Continue reading Eccehomo priest nabbed for running off with the cash

Can’t pay your catechism? Clean the church instead!

The new priest at Adra, one Juan Daniel López (not the new priest in Maria, who recently flipped and called his parishioners “heretics” before telling several rambling stories about who’d done what with whom – before being saved by the lynch mob by the Guardia) has offered his poorer parishioners the chance to do odd jobs around the church instead of paying for their childrens catechism. (Catecismo -catechism- is the Catholic session of lessons before Continue reading Can’t pay your catechism? Clean the church instead!

The Civil War in Turre

See that tiny little pole thingy just in front of the electric pylon? Here’s a close up. Do you know what it is yet? It’s a memorial. Shall I tell you what it says? “Here he gave his life for GOD and for SPAIN, the martyr D. Florencio Lopez Ejea, Priest of Turre, early one morning between the 16th and 17th of August of 1936, HERE.” Or, in Spanish, “Aqui dio su vida por DIOS Continue reading The Civil War in Turre
