Diesel dropped to under €1 a litre at over 100 petrol stations across Spain yesterday, and in the province two stations are selling it for €0,99 a litre: one in Vícar and another in El Ejido. The Shell garage in Roquetas del Mar is selling the most expensive fuel in Spain, according to a survey by consumer organisation OCU (here). The average price for fuel at the Shell is over 13% more expensive than the national average. The cheapest stations are all up in the godforsaken empty northern barrens of Spain. Madrid has become the first region of Spain to allow a new style of low cost gas station to open, issuing eight permits across the region. It’s an attempt to shake up Spains oligopolistic network of gas stations by letting new operators into the market, and comes from a 2013 change to the appropriate national laws.

In order to up the Royal Coffers, President Zapatero has approved a quiet tax hike on petrol & fags. Petrol (for non-commercial use) will go up €2,9 cents a litre. A pack of cigs will go up by around €0,20 a pack.
