11 aerial units continue to patrol the skies controlling the three fires which started last night in the Levante. According to the authorities, last nights storm caused over 2,000 lightening strikes which set off three major fires in Turre, Mojacar and Huercal Overa. Overnight in Huercal Overa, three units of 28 firefighters supported by environmental agents fought the flames in the dark, and the hamlet of El Saltador was evacuated. In Mojacar, a similar number Continue reading 11 aerial units battle fires in Levante this morning

Man with giraffe in van stopped near Huercal Overa

The traffic police in Huercal Overa are vigilant people. Their latest arrest is of a Spanish man from Denia who had a giraffe in the back of his van. It turns out that the giraffe was destined for the Tabernas zoo, and was being transported from the Netherlands. Both zoos say they knew nothing of the unusual -not to say illegal- transport arrangements, and claim to have been duped by the man into awarding him Continue reading Man with giraffe in van stopped near Huercal Overa

Chap who used the rambla to get home after the fería – didn’t

Deciding, after the Huercal-Overa fería on Friday, to take a shortcut home to avoid any possibly unpleasent interviews with those nasty coppers and their pesky breathaliser machines, this unfortunate chap realised too late that the floods last month had somewhat altered the rambla, and this is what then happened: The driver was speeding down the rambla Los Reyes on his way back home to Úrcal, it seems to avoid a nearby traffic control on the Continue reading Chap who used the rambla to get home after the fería – didn’t

Huercal Overa slaps huge tax on new Chinese shops

Huercal Overa has lowered taxes on opening new businesses, but slapped a huge new opening tax on large “Oriental” style shops, of 20,000€. So if you want to open a Chinese shop over 700 m2, you have to pay this tax to get your opening license. The townhall justifies this move by saying that these shops are proliferating and destroying other businesses in the town. So expect the next Chinese shop that opens to have Continue reading Huercal Overa slaps huge tax on new Chinese shops

Carboneras desalination plant FINALLY connected to the network, but I bet you still can’t drink the water

150,000 people will start to receive desalinated water from the Carboneras plant, after the Minister for the Environment opened the taps to allow water to flow from Carboneras to the Levante water network. The desalination plant was built several years ago in Carboneras, because that’s where the power plant is. But it was never connected to the Levante, because the water pipe that existed was designed to take water from Mojacar to Carboneras – and Continue reading Carboneras desalination plant FINALLY connected to the network, but I bet you still can’t drink the water

Claire’s Bakery, Huercal Overa

I was recently in Huercal Overa, transacting some business. Being hungry and being close, I popped into Claire’s Bakery, on the street down from the top motorway exit to the main throughfare (same road as the Pepper Tree and Choice Entertainment, if that helps). I was enticed in by the sign on the door promising “fresh home cooking” and felt sure that there would be something tasty for a snack in the car, given the Continue reading Claire’s Bakery, Huercal Overa

No, I haven’t started reading the Daily Mirror, it was in La Voz de Almería. I can’t find the article quoted on the Daily Mirror website, but it seems that in a recent survey “La Inmaculada” hospital in Huercal Overa was voted second only to the University Hospital in Alicante for quality of treatment and patient care.
