Diesel dropped to under €1 a litre at over 100 petrol stations across Spain yesterday, and in the province two stations are selling it for €0,99 a litre: one in Vícar and another in El Ejido. Prices have dropped to those of five years ago, as the drop in crude oil finally starts to filter through to the consumer. Most of the cheapest petrol stations are in Catalunya. Madrid has become the first region of Spain to allow a new style of low cost gas station to open, issuing eight permits across the region. It’s an attempt to shake up Spains oligopolistic network of gas stations by letting new operators into the market, and comes from a 2013 change to the appropriate national laws.
You know those kind souls from the “gas company” that knock on your door and charge you a vast amount to change the regulator on your gas bottle? A whole bunch of them got arrested nationally yesterday. Not for ripping off over 2,500 main pensioners, or demanding money with menaces, but for defrauding the revenue.
The EU has ruled that the centimo sanitario is illegal, opening the way to a court ruling that Spain must return the almost 13 billion euros collected to drivers. It’s a tax that the regions are allowed to apply at their discretion to fuel sold at the pumps, and the reason why Murcia is slightly cheaper for gas than Andalucia (Murcia doesn’t collect the tax). The price of a bombona looks set to almost double if a government plan to stop underwriting the cost of them goes ahead. Gas Natural Fenosa, the largest bombona company in Spain, has confirmed that it expect the government to “shortly” stop subsidising the cost of bottled gas, and to stop fixing the price – meaning it will soar!
Yup – a recent BBC survey shows that the average kw/h in Spain is a third more than in the UK! Butane has gone up again and an orange bottle will, from tomorrow Tuesday, cost you a total of €17,49. 2,1% increase in just two months. The government has added a new stealth tax to butance (€0,15 a ton of liquid gas). This price will run until the 9th of July when it will be revised.
