Covid lockdown has killed almost as many as Covid in Spain

A distressing report emerges today from government statistics in Spain, showing that the lockdown has killed many more than the disease. From the start of the pandemic until the third week in September, there were 54.811 excess deaths (more people dying that the average over the last few years). 30.633 of these have been officially attributed to Covid. 24.148 (that’s 80% of the Covid deaths!) died from other causes. Nephew kills uncle with gun in Albox street

A man has shot dead his uncle near the Albox music school. It happened at 13:20 today, and witnesses say both men were armed. A shootout between the two men ocurred in Ramón y Cajal street which left one man dead on the floor. The Local Police were the first to arrive on the scene but were unable to save the life of the dead man. The nephew was arrested shortly afterwards.

39 drown off Almeria coast

39 people are believed to have drowned this morning after their boat went down. The Spanish coastguard have been looking for a patera (immigrant boat) since Wednesday night after being warned that one with 54 passengers had set sail from Morroco to reach Spain. At midday today, 15 survivors from the wreck were discovered clinging to the remains of their inflatable boat 40 nautical miles off the coast. 13 men and 2 women. Man drowns on Mojacar beach

A 59 year old man from Madrid drowned on Bancal beach in Mojacar (down towards Hotel Best Indalo) this afternoon after he was dashed against rocks by strong currents. Other bathers raised the alarm when they realised the man was in trouble and lifeguards rushed to the area, but the man had suffered a severe head wound from the rocks. Local shepherd falls to death in Turre

A local shepherd has been found dead in the high mountains above Turre. 51 year old Paco usually returned his goats to his shed late at night and returned home at around midnight, but last night he did not come home and eventually his family alerted the emergency services. Guardia Civil explosives expert dies in accidental explosion at central barracks

An explosion has occurred at the central Guardia Civil barracks in Almeria city, just after 3pm, and a Guardia Civil explosives expert has died as a result of the explosion. It happened in an underground garage underneath the barracks central dining room, which was serving lunch at the time. In 1887, the town of Almería ceded in perpetuity, 888 square metres of land to be used as an “English cemetery” for Anglicans who died in the province. 45 year old cyclist found dead in the hills

A 45 year old man has been found dead on his cycle up in the hills above Felix. Initial reports suggest that he probably had a heart attack whilst climbing a steep hill in the heat. A reminder to us all to take it easy in the heat of day, drink plenty of water and take a mobile phone if we’re going to be out and about exercising by ourselves.

Body of missing British resident found in Cuevas

The body of 60 year old British man living in Zurgena who went missing yesterday has been found in Cuevas. Guardia Civil teams searching for the man, who suffered from amnesia, were alerted to the presence of a body at the bottom of the Cala del Peñón Cortado. The London born man appears to have fallen off the cliffs. The fire brigade were called to help scale the cliff and retrieve his body.
