A new town is born: Balanegra splits from Berja

The village of Berja has been split off from the town of Berja by Ministerial decree today, and becomes the 103’rd municipality in Almería. There are now 778 municipalities in Andalusia, despite an earlier attempt by Rajoy to reduce the number of townhalls. Balanegra has been autonomous from Berja for the last 28 years as an “entidad de ámbito territorial inferior al municipio (EATIM)“, or territorial entity inferior in size to that of a municipality. Junta asks EU to 280M to finish off Almería’s motorways

The Junta has said it will finish off all of the abandoned motorways in the province, if the EU stumps up 280 million euros to pay for it all. Well, that’s the essence of yesterday’s statement. Panther from Berja now spotted in mountains above Dalías

The “Berja Panther”, a large black cat that has terrified the town since August, has now been spotted in the mountains above Dalías. A massive operation by the Junta de Andalucía, Tabernas Zoo, the Seprona arm of the Guardia Civil and specialists from the Ministry of the Environment has so far failed to catch the animal, although spoor has been found. Berja big cat scare

Berja is in a state of panic after the Mayor hit the emergency button, after seeing a “panther” in the park. The small town (above and to the left of Almeria city) has been running around in a panic ever since residents started reporting a large feline roaming loose in the local park.
