Balearic Isles drops “all signs to be in Catalan” law

Back in the heyday of 2001, the Balearic Isles government passed  a law saying that all shop signs and notices had to be in Catalan, with Castillano (Spanish) an optional second. Fines for failing to comply with the linguistic Nazi police in their endeavours carried fines of between €1,501 to €60,000. No more state medicines in Balearic Islands as debt is unsustainable

Pharmacists in the Balearic Islands have announced that patients must now pay for their prescription medicines up front and individually ask the regional government for their money back, after the debt owed to the pharmacists by the regional health service became “unsustainable”. First casualty of the cutbacks – Balearic Isles will close two hospitals, fire staff

The region of the Balearic Isles has announced that due to cutbacks, it will have to close two hospitals: the Hospital General and the Hospital Juan March. This in an effort to save some 350 million euros a year. Balearic Isles ex-President jailed for corruption involving King’s son-in-law

Jaume Matas, the ex-President of the Balearic Islands, has been sentenced to 6 years in jail for corruption and fraud, after he was convicted of using public money to bribe journalists into writing nice things about him, and to ignore certain allegations.
