Low passenger numbers have caused airlines to drop 11 routes from Almeria airport this month. We were supposed to have 29 routes across Europe this summer, but only 18 continue to function after airlines suddenly cancelled the rest for August. Five of the cancelled routes were low cost and charter flights to European cities: Birmingham, Belgrade, Helsinki, Rome, Oslo. Thomas Cook, Monarch increase capacity to Almeria

Tour operator Thomas Cook has been forced to upgrade the aircraft it uses for the popular Manchester to Almeria route due to increased demand from passengers. An Airbus A330-200, which seats over 300 passengers and has a double aisle, was used on the 23rd of July as the standard 200 seater plane had insufficient capacity. The Almeria airport blog says that Air Europa has dropped Almería airport for 2015, and that in addition the Palma and Dusseldorf routes have also been cancelled by their respective airlines. Almeria – Seville – Madrid flights to be combined into one trip

Air Europa, which is taking over the Almeria – Seville and the Almeria-Madrid routes, has announced that it will not operate separate flights, but instead one long “triangle”. So the route will be Madrid – Almeria – Seville and vice versa, as from the 17th of Feb. Almeria – Madrid route taken up by Air Europa

Air Europa has announced that it is to launch a scheduled flight between Almeria Airport and Madrid Barajas. It will fly twice on weekdays and once on Sundays. Flights start on the 17th of Feb with tickets costing from €113 per seat. The airline has promised to cover the route only until the 31st of July 2014, at which point it has the option to continue with the route. A regular bus service between Mojacar and Almeria airport could be on the cards after the government agreed to study if it could be economically viable. The promise came after Andrés Miguel García Lorca, subdelegate of the government for the province, visited Mojácar to discuss security arrangements for this coming summer. Russian tour operator starts new flights to Almeria airport

Natalie Tours, a large Russian tour operator, has announced it will start a new route bringing in Russian tourists to Almeria. The Moscow – Almería route will be flown once every 10 days on a charter basis, according to the announcement. Russian tourists have an average stay in Andalucia of 10,6 days and spend around 120 euros a day whilst here, making them some of the most attractive tourists for the Junta to fly in. Almeria Airport part of “viability study” by government, confirms La Voz

La Voz de Almería, our local paper, has received confirmation from the AENA, the airports authority, that Almería airport is part of a mass “viability study” by the government, which is examining  Spain’s loss making airport infrastructure for savings. At the close of 2010, Almeria airport was technically worth 75 million euros, but had accumulated aggregated debts of 110 million euros. Ryanair announces new Almeria – Liverpool route as from March

Ryanair has announced it will start a new twice weekly route between Almeria and Liverpool. Flights will be on Thursdays and Sundays, starting on the 25th of March. That means that over the summer Ryanair will serve three routes to the UK from Almeria: London, East Midlands and Liverpool.
