Almanzora motorway money goes to Jaén

The Junta de Andalucía had promised that works on the Almanzora motorway through Albox would restart by Easter. Well, as ideal newspaper points out today, we’re past Easter and still no sign of any workers. Nor has the Ministry responded to questions on timescales. However, a motorway in a similar situation, called the autovía del olivar in Jaén, on which works stopped two years ago, today saw the return of workers, after the EU stumped Continue reading Almanzora motorway money goes to Jaén

Still no date on when Almanzora motorworks will resume

Another snag has hit the abandoned Almanzora motorway – the company that’s supposed to be building it has basically gone under, so works can’t resume. That’s the explanation of the Junta for why works haven’t started, despite the fact that cash has been made available in the 2014 budget. Work on the Almanzora motorway was abandoned in 2011 when the Junta ran out of cash. They tried to do a civil-public partnership, but no-one was Continue reading Still no date on when Almanzora motorworks will resume

Albox Council votes to kick blackmailing gypsies out of town

More emerges on the Albox blackmailing case: the council will ask a court to kick the offenders out of town, or failing that, impose a massive restraining order on them. It seems there’s a big gypsy clan up there called Los Pertolos. A nasty little clan by all accounts, who over the last year have been dabbling in a bit of blackmail, protection racket and extortion. They’re fairly famous – ask any local bartender up Continue reading Albox Council votes to kick blackmailing gypsies out of town

Why it’s called “Almanzora”

A tale is told to me of how the Almanzora river got its name*… Locals say that their ancestors told them that the name comes from Moorish times, when Caliph Mohammed Almanzor was returning with his troops from a sortie into the Levante. When he reached the banks of this river, he was warned by an old crone of its dangerous flash floods. Seeing the storm clouds gathering in the mountains, he wisely decided to Continue reading Why it’s called “Almanzora”

Fires in mountains after electrical storm

Tonights electrical storm has left at least two large forest fires blazing in the Cabrera mountains, and another away at the bottom of the Almanzora above Huercal Overa. The visible fires from Turre are a large one the other side of the mountains below Los Moralicos, and further up the mountains towards Los Giles, although positioning them exactly is difficult in the dark. Emergency vehicle lights are clearly visible as they crisscross the mountains. The Continue reading Fires in mountains after electrical storm

Almanzora motorway project deemed “dead in the water” as protests loom

AEMA says that the Almanzora motorway is “dead in the water” and that it will never be finished in our lifetime, as attempts by the Junta to attract private investment to finish the motorway fail – because it will cost them six times as much as actually building the thing themselves. AEMA is the Asociación de Empresarios del Mármol de Andalucía (Andalucian Marble Business Association) and has launched a public threat that it will start Continue reading Almanzora motorway project deemed “dead in the water” as protests loom

Almanzora motorway work stops after the construction company goes bust

Work on the Almanzora motorway has officially stopped as Detea, the company building the 15km connection between the A7 and Purchena has gone bust after failing to renegotiate a 40 million euro loan. The company is also working on a further 25km stretch of the motorway, and the 1km connection between Albox industrial park and the motorway. Work on all three sections has stopped. Banks refused to extend loans to the company due to the Continue reading Almanzora motorway work stops after the construction company goes bust

-10ºC tonight!

Watch out if you’re in the high mountains of the province, as a blast of Siberian cold reaches the province. Temperatures are expected to dip as low as -10ºC in the high mountains of Los Vélez, high Almanzora valley and Nacimiento, it should be the coldest night since 2005. Last time it got this cold, it snowed in Almerimar! The weather girl on TVE last night indicated that the snow level for the province could Continue reading -10ºC tonight!

Almanzora motorway works stop again due to lack of cash

The Junta has admitted that due to a failure to pay the last installment of 1,5 million euros to the construction company, work on the Almanzora motorway has stopped. Aldea-BSK, the construction consortium, has refused to comment, but workers failed to turn up from late last week. It seems that the blockage is over the payment for the concrete beams they use as part of the foundations. They are made in Antequera, and the company Continue reading Almanzora motorway works stop again due to lack of cash
