Smooth FM returns to the airwaves with new owner

Albox residents will be able to enjoy a new radio station next week! Grant writes in to tell me that: Smooth FM is returning to FM in Albox on 89.8 from 2 June. “New shows” and a “new format” are promised for the re-launch. The station has a new owner, Ray Peters, who moved from Majorca to Arboleas at the end of last year. Longtime presenter Mark Deakin is leaving and presents his last regular Continue reading Smooth FM returns to the airwaves with new owner

New medical heliport ground broken in Albox

Ground has been broken for the new medical heliport in Albox. It will form part of the 061 emergency service network, and will have connections for ambulances to deliver critical patients to a helicopter for transport to the appropriate hospital. The townhall has helped out by speed tracking local permits, donating the ground and exempting local taxes for the construction.

Almanzora motorway works to restart this month and be finished in a year

The Junta has announced that work on the Almanzora motorway will restart “in May”, although they didn’t give a date, and will finish by March 2015. Work on the motorway stopped in 2012 during la crisis and since then the motorway has been sitting, half built and mouldering, under the hot sun. 85 % of the motorway has been finished, with just 8,7 km to be done.

Almanzora motorway money goes to Jaén

The Junta de Andalucía had promised that works on the Almanzora motorway through Albox would restart by Easter. Well, as ideal newspaper points out today, we’re past Easter and still no sign of any workers. Nor has the Ministry responded to questions on timescales. However, a motorway in a similar situation, called the autovía del olivar in Jaén, on which works stopped two years ago, today saw the return of workers, after the EU stumped Continue reading Almanzora motorway money goes to Jaén

Still no date on when Almanzora motorworks will resume

Another snag has hit the abandoned Almanzora motorway – the company that’s supposed to be building it has basically gone under, so works can’t resume. That’s the explanation of the Junta for why works haven’t started, despite the fact that cash has been made available in the 2014 budget. Work on the Almanzora motorway was abandoned in 2011 when the Junta ran out of cash. They tried to do a civil-public partnership, but no-one was Continue reading Still no date on when Almanzora motorworks will resume

One of the Albox Mafia arrested – but for drink driving!

You’ll remember that last week the Albox Mayor lodged a criminal complaint against a group of blackmailers, extortioners and general mafiosos in his village, as he claims the local shopkeepers are too scared to speak up. Anyway, one of the two main suspects, a gypsy from the Los Pertolos clan, known as RRT in the press, was arrested over the weekend. For drink driving, no less. They haven’t been able to get this lowlife on Continue reading One of the Albox Mafia arrested – but for drink driving!

Albox Council votes to kick blackmailing gypsies out of town

More emerges on the Albox blackmailing case: the council will ask a court to kick the offenders out of town, or failing that, impose a massive restraining order on them. It seems there’s a big gypsy clan up there called Los Pertolos. A nasty little clan by all accounts, who over the last year have been dabbling in a bit of blackmail, protection racket and extortion. They’re fairly famous – ask any local bartender up Continue reading Albox Council votes to kick blackmailing gypsies out of town

No more demolitions say Junta (unless they happen, of course)

The Junta de Andalucia has dismissed concerns by the Almanzora Business Association AEPA (Asociación de Empresarios de Albox-Valle del Almanzora (AEPA)) about future house demolitions, saying that they are concentrating on making home legal, not seeking demolitions of existing homes. But no changes to the law are being planned, and no special exemptions will be allowed to legalise the illegal homes in Albox area. “Our objective is to legalise as many of these homes as Continue reading No more demolitions say Junta (unless they happen, of course)

New forums for Arboleas and Albox villages have been launched

A press release reaches me from a Steve Parkinson, local resident, letting me know that two new forums for Arboleas and Albox have been setup. I don’t “do” local forums as they depress me and then I go and drink too much in order to forget, but it’s nice to see the local expat community joining together. The addresses: http://www.arboleas.almeriaforums.com/ and http://www.almeriaforums.com/albox/forum/ Steve tells me: My ethos for the forum is: Forum rules Be warned that we Continue reading New forums for Arboleas and Albox villages have been launched

Albox home demolitions hits UK press big time

Front page of The Times I noticed this morning. That’ll undo the millions spent this year trying to sell Spanish holiday homes to the British. The article adds that this was a holiday home bought recently and the court accepted that the owners had no fault. No compensation however… “When we bought the house in 2005 it already had a demolition order on it but  our solicitor who was not a lawyer didn’t tell us Continue reading Albox home demolitions hits UK press big time
