Junta approves “dry port” in Níjar, 3,400 jobs to be created

The Junta has approved the creation of a dry port in Níjar, which could create up to 3,400 jobs. We haven’t heard anything about this for ages and suddenly it pops up again.

Question is: Where are the trains that will supply the port???

174 hectares of land next to the motorway in Níjar has been set aside for this massive project. The idea is to create a logistical centre which will receive products from the inland and prepare them for shipping.

The dry port will have connections to the ports of Carboneras, Garrucha and Almería, the airport, the A7 motorway and (if it is ever constructed) the new AVE railway to Almería city.

The Junta will stump up 33 million euros for the project, with its private sector partner OHL providing a further 4 million euros. OHL already owns a fair lump of the land, the rest of it will be seized from unsuspecting landowners via a land grab, or else they will be invited to develop the land in tandem.

It is located in the triangle between the A7 motorway, the AL3108 road and the rambla.

The project was today declared as “of regional interest”, meaning it is vital for Andalucía as a whole, so a fair bit of weight behind it to push through local planning applications, etc.
