Heavy rain brings chaos to Almería

Heavy rain on Tuesday morning bought chaos to Almeria city and the outlying area. Emergency services dealt with 73 call outs across the west of the province in a single morning due to localised flooding.

A level 1 flood alert was declared in the early hours of the morning, which was lifted later that afternoon.

Several people had to be rescued from their vehicles after getting stuck whilst crossing floodwaters, including a man and his 10 year old son after their vehicle sank up to its roof in deep water at a well known flood spot. National police officers rescued them in a daring raid.

The main rail line into the city was closed for several hours. A large number of underground carparks were flooded as well as the basement of the social security headquarters. A section of the A7 motorway was closed after a rockfall.

No personal injuries have been reported.

Opposition parties in Almeria and Roquetas have renewed calls for better flood prevention in the cities centres. But the Mayor of Almeria struck back at accusers saying that numerous complaints posted to his twitter account were “obviously part of a political campaign” against him.
