A new town is born: Balanegra splits from Berja

The village of Berja has been split off from the town of Berja by Ministerial decree today, and becomes the 103’rd municipality in Almería.

There are now 778 municipalities in Andalusia, despite an earlier attempt by Rajoy to reduce the number of townhalls.

Balanegra has been autonomous from Berja for the last 28 years as an “entidad de ámbito territorial inferior al municipio (EATIM)“, or territorial entity inferior in size to that of a municipality. It was ruled by Berja but had a sort of sub-Mayor and sub-council running the place.

A small coastal village of 2.835 people, in the west of the province and surrounded by greenhouses, it will be 31.95 square km in size. It’s the 18th new municipality to be created in Andalucia since democracy kicked in.
