Garrucha prawns to be known as Balearic Islands Prawns under new EU rules

The EU has decreed that the waters off Garrucha belong to the Balearic Island fisheries… which means that anything caught in the waters off Almería will have to be marked as coming from the Balearic Islands.

The move has infuriated the boats catching Garrucha Prawns, who have spent a vast amount marketing the large tasty red prawns that live near the Mojácar playa sewage outlet, as it means they can’t market their catches are almerienses any more.

The ruling also affects fishing rights, taking Almería away from the rest of Andalusia and plonking it in with Alicante, etc.
