The proposal was put forwards today by the Minister for Development and backed by the Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella. The proposal has been accepted by the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy.

A petition on asking for the airport to be renamed (in a similar way that JFK airport in New York was) had been gathering force.
