Doña Paquita has died at 103 years of age. Doña Francisca Díaz Torres, named hija predilicta de Andalucia, “favourite daughter of Andalucia” by the Parliament of Andalusia in 2010, Doña Paquita is considered to be one of the first feminists and ecologists in Almería, and the “grandmother” of the Cabo de Gata natural park. She was born in Almeria city to local Judge Andrés Díaz, and Josefina Torres, from a well off family in Nijar. Enrique Ponce, the bullfighter, has suffered severe goring after his bullfight today went badly wrong. As he plunged the killing stroke into the bull, the animal with its last strength swiped at him and managed to gore him through the chest with its massive horns. It happened in today’s feria de Fallas at Valencia, the traditional bullfight held during Valencia’s famous las fallas festival.
According to a survey by the influential CIS organisation, 59,6% of Catalans want outright independence from Spain. But the survey also shows that people are more outraged about the denial of their basic democratic rights: 87.3% of the population would accept the result of a referendum, the same survey shows, and only 9.3% would continue to fight after a legal and fair referendum.
