4G and fibre optic comes to Almeria

Telefonica has started its 60 million euro upgrade of landlines and mobiles across the province.

The first phase of fibre optic will only be in the capital city, but then the major population centres around the city will be connected to the new and faster Telefonica network.

By 2016, all major population centres should be on fibre optic, and a million households across Andalusia should be connected to the net via ultra high fibre optic. They call it FTTH, fibre to the home.

They must have heard about the great BBC switch off…

They are also upgrading the mobile phone network to 4G, starting in Almeria and then rolling out.

Some 350 techie jobs are to be created.
