The head of the Izquierda Unida party (greens and Commies), Cayo Lara, has proposed to the party that it sets in its manifesto the calling for a national Referendum on the future of the Spanish Monarchy. The IU coalition party is Spains third largest party by votes.
In brief, the suggestion is that IU proposes in Congress the holding of a referendum to establish a Spanish Republic and depose the King.
Lara says that the decadence of the King and the corruption allegations have caused a profound social change in Spain, and that the time has come to open a national debate on whether to keep the King or establish a truly Federal Republic of Spain.
