40 million euro tramway mothballed as Vélez Málaga can’t afford to run it

Vélez Málaga has dumped its almost new tramway, opened in late 2006 at a cost of 40 million euros, as it’s too expensive to run and is never likely to make a profit.

The tram ran between the city centre and the beachside of Torre del Mar.

It has never turned a profit and costs the city over a million to run each year. This money, says the Mayor, will now be used instead to expand the city fleet of buses instead.
