Público newspaper goes under

Público, the national newspaper published by Mediapubli has announced that Sunday will be its last paper edition. Falling advertising and sales means that the paper is no longer profitable, and the company will be filing for voluntary bankruptcy on Monday at a Barcelona mercantile court.

The company, which owns a number of regional titles in the north of Spain, will continue with its other regional titles, and the website publico.es, the fourth most visited Spanish news site, will continue. Mediapubli says the paper will continue in digital format only. It was launched in 2007 and had daily sales of around 87,000 last year.

It was a progressive left wing anti-church paper that didn’t really fit in with that section of Spanish society who actually read newspapers in print format.
