A chap in Aielo (Valencia) swears blind his great-uncle invested the recipe after traveling the world, and started making it in the town. They even sent a few bottles up to the King, who enjoyed it. However, in 1885 he sold all the rights to it to the Yank who made it popular. (Story from El Mundo, in Spanish)

They’ve even gone and opened a museum there.
