The municipal animal pound of El Ejido has said that there appear to be fewer stray animals on the streets of El Ejido. To date, it seems they have only caught 235 stray animals; in 2009, they caught 883.
The pound said that they weren’t receiving as many calls as last year regarding stray animals, and said that this was encouraging.
The pound claims that around 70% of all the stray animals caught are found homes.
The townhall has, since 2007, contracted out this service to the company “Animal Service”, which works with local residents and the local police to detect and capture stray animals before they can begin to breed. Last year, the townhall even upped the contract to improve services in the Bahía de San Miguel area, which saw a rise in the number of young animal stray being born there. The townhall is proud of its animal service, which it claims is the only such service in the whole province. Ecologistas en Accion, the environmental group, has said that the service is an efficient one and should be copied in more towns.
