The mayor of Berja has voted in favour of a motion, together with all councilors, that he should pay out of his own pocket, the severance pay of his recently fired head of police. Antonio Torres, the mayor, fired the head of the Local Police as his first act after being sworn in after the last elections, claiming that he was corrupt and useless. The townhall has just lost a court case for unfair dismissal brought by the former head, and Antonio said that on reflection, he should have dismissed him in a somewhat fairer fashion. He agreed with a motion brought by the Opposition that it was not fair that taxpayers should have to pay out for his own rash actions and promised to meet the severance pay plus court costs himself.
