La Pará is a new bar and restaurant that has opened up at the top of the main street in Turre, as you leave going out towards the cementery.
It´s very, very nicely done out inside, with no expense spared on the décor. This was done by someone who plans to stay a while, and these people are Ana, her husband Marcos and Ana’s sister whose name escapes me (but I´ll find out next time I go down there). Ana will be remembered as the lady who has graced a number of bars in Cabrera and has now branched out on her own.

The large patio outside has a number of tables and chairs, and is a pleasent, sheltered spot from whence to sit and ponder upon Life. The main bar is tastefully done out, and the restaurant, while small, is also a comfortable place.
The food is Turre in style. Gurullos, Pelotas, Migas, Morcillas and more all adorn the menu. All homemade, all delicious, and almost all of them sampled by me.
The philosophy behind the menu is a wonderful one – they will cook what they want, what is in season, and if they run out they tell you so, instead of having a lot of frozen stuff lying around. So it´s fresh, it´s off the plancha, and it can be eaten as a full meal, as dishes to pick at between the group, or simply as a tapa with a beer.
If Marcos is on duty in the afternoon the toros might be on the TV – if Ana, possibly it might be off or tuned to something tasteful. Marcos looks glum, but is a happy man at heart.
Recommendation? Delicious. Try it, you´ll be back, unless your palate doesn´t pass ketchup on chips.
PS – La Pará, in case you´re wondering, is slang meaning “the Stop”. La Parada – or ¡aki la pará! as they shout to conductors around here.

I was going to call this post “Work starts on the AVÉ”, but two signs does not a high speed railway make. Although a few red posts have been stuck in the ground at random. I’m tempted to move one about a meter to the right, just to see what will happen.
The signs were put up yesterday (I’ve only just found the cable for my camera phone to download the photo) by a construction company that had “especialistas en fiestas y grupos de musica” on the side of the lorry. I originally thought they were going to have a concert there.
The signs have gone up where the AVÉ will pass the old Turre – Los Gallardos road. From there you can see up the valley to where they are digging the Sorbas tunnel, near La Herreria. I’m working on an interesting article for the next edition of The Reader, so stay tuned for the story behind the rails.
Crikey! Remind me to never again say that the British parliament is more efficient that the Spanish one (not that I ever had, mind you).
People selling adult videos, including pornography, to children are to escape prosecution after the discovery of a Whitehall blunder that means that the 1984 law regulating the video industry was never enacted.
It also leaves the industry in disarray with the classification system designed to protect the under-18s from violent and explicit material no longer officially in operation.

This made me laugh. Martin had a point tho’. Marching kids out of school and telling them to “smile and wave” when the President came by?
Don’t steal kids for political photos – or when Franco mark 2 came to Turre.
Only consolation is that old Grimy didn’t look too happy in the photo. Did he want to be surrounded by sticky kids?
Here’s an (allegedly true) story someone told me last night. Names changed to protect the guilty from public justice and me getting sued.
A certain Spanish historian, here in Mojácar, has a local pressure group which is taking a large utility company (let us assume it’s an electric company, for arguments sake) to court, and winning, for expropriating the land of small landowners, ignoring a more direct route through some big landowners and the Llano Central.
Back in around Feb, he was interviewed by a journalist from the local edition of an Andalucian newspaper which is part of a larger group. “How’s your pecker doing, can you keep the pressure up against XXX S.A. long term in the courts, etc” type public interest story. The story was published.
Next morning, the journalist who wrote this was called into his editor’s office and fired for “professional incompetence”.
“You what? ” he asked his editor.
“Fired” repeats the editor. “I’ve just had the MD of the whole group on the phone giving me a direct order. Because he’s just had the Spanish Director of Marketing for XXX S.A. on the line, pulling all advertising from the group. ” (Seems XXX S.A. spend around 5,5 million euros annually across all the publications of that media group).
“XXX S.A. didn’t like the idea of publishing anything critical of them, in any way, and your head needs to be presented on a platter.”
In a true Spanish compromise, he was fired and then rehired a week later under a false name, but at least honour was satisfied and the point hammered home with (a very large) hammer.
Free press, eh?
I was up at the opening of the new 10 pin bowling centre in Arboleas, the Arboleas Bowling Centre.
Amazing place. I walked in and thought I’d been transported to a big city. No expense spared on the decor.
12 high tech bowling lanes, comfy shoes, nice socks and even better prices. Spacy, decent a/c and a large cafeteria serving what looked like quite decent snacks and meals.
I predict a rosy future, and if you fancy a game – well, prices start from €3,50 p.p. per game, so what are you waiting for?
